SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT
The department has evolved over the years. In January 1973, the first 10 full-time firefighters were hired and placed on shift to provide protection from two stations. (6448 Central and 6633 Monroe) At that time, the number of volunteer firefighters was in the 50's. As time passed, the increased demand for specialized training, the increased incident volume, and the decrease in citizens able to volunteer time allowed for the change in the type of service provided. Many of the original volunteers were local businessmen who found they could no longer leave their jobs as much as the Fire Department required due to the increased volume of incidents. The original volunteer organization became our part-paid firefighters. The part-paid personnel drillĀ 4 times a month, attend outside training as able, have a business meeting once a month, and respond to alarms based on their availability.
