SYLVANIA FIRE DEPARTMENT - PART TIME

The Sylvania Township Fire Department’s new Part-Time Firefighter/EMT Program started in the spring of 2010. This program provides a supplemental group of trained and certified part-time Firefighter/EMT’s to augment our full-time career Firefighter/Paramedics; however, the part-time program emphasizes having the part-time Firefighters scheduled and on-duty in the fire stations, rather than responding from home in personal vehicles, at the time of an alarm. The new program evolved from the department’s long standing part-paid/volunteer program that had been around since the beginning of the fire department. The new program is designed to add up to four (4) additional part-time firefighters per shift, or one (1) part-time firefighter per station, each day. This will give the department operational flexibility with staffing and help to manage overtime costs. Part-time firefighters work with the full-time firefighters as part of the station crew, respond on all runs and participate in all station duties.

To become a part-time firefighter in Sylvania Township you must take and pass all the same entry level tests that a full-time member must pass and successfully complete the Sylvania Township Fire Department’s Recruit Training Academy. After completing the entry requirements, part-time firefighters are eligible to be hired as full-time employees when an opening occurs, as long as they are certified as a State of Ohio EMT Paramedic. The part-time firefighters must have a minimum training certification as a State of Ohio Firefighter II, EMT-B and Haz-Mat operations before going onto shift. All part-time firefighters will train with the fulltime crews they work with to gain and reinforce operational proficiency. Presently, the department has 4 ten part-time firefighters. The department is looking to add new part-time firefighters in 2011.
