SYLVANIA FIRE DEPARTMENT - PERSONNEL

The Sylvania Township Fire Department takes great pride in its commitment to providing fire and emergency medical service to all of the residents and visitors of Sylvania Township and the City of Sylvania.  Our high level of operational readiness and progressive use of tactics, during both fire suppression and EMS incidents, is maintained through rigorous training supported by the dedicated leadership of our command staff.  The department operates under the direction of the Fire Chief.  His command staff includes two (2) Deputy Fire Chiefs: one in Fire Operations and the other in Fire Prevention, and a Captain serving as the Department Training and Safety Officer.  Two (2) administrative assistants supporting the command staff, round out the management team.  The normal business hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Chief Officers schedule themselves to be on-call to respond to serious incidents and address any concerns relevant to the operation of the Department during non-business hours.

The Fire Operations Division provides the delivery of emergency services and community support from each of our four (4) Fire Stations.  Each facility is strategically located throughout the fire district to provide a prompt response.  Each station provides the daily 24-hour staffing for a pumping engine or ladder truck as well as Life Squad 6 (Lucas County EMS).  The Department maintains a fleet of five (5) pumping engines (three of which carry extrication equipment); a 95’ tower ladder; a 100’ tractor-drawn aerial ladder truck; two (2) mini-pumpers and an air unit as its operational fleet.

Maintaining a minimum staffing of 14 on-duty personnel, per shift, to effectively deliver a wide array of services, such as structure fires, automobile extrications, medical emergencies and even simultaneous multiple emergencies, is provided by our career full-time employees composed of 44 firefighter-paramedics and 12 Lieutenants, while five (5) part-time employees provide supplemental staffing to support the Fire Division.

Platoon Work Schedule
Sylvania firefighters work a 24-hour on-duty, 48 hour off-duty work schedule, utilizing a  Three  Platoon System (A, B and C Shifts).  This schedule rotation results in a 50-hour work week (as averaged over a 28-day cycle that includes an assigned "Kelly day"-off).  Each of the platoon shifts is assigned a minimum of thirteen firefighter-paramedics and four officers.
