SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP TRUSTEESSPECIAL MEETINGOctober 1, 2008
Pamela Hanley called the Special Meeting of October 1, 2008 of the Sylvania Township Trustees to order at 7:00 p.m.Roll call was answered by Pamela Hanley, Carol Contrada, Deidre Liedel and David Simko, Fiscal Officer. The purpose of the meeting was to provide an opportunity for Sylvania Township residents to offer their opinions regarding the November Ballot Merger Issue.Ms. Hanley explained the ground rules for the public forum. Those speaking in support of the merger were: Penny Levine, Carol Lindhuber, Gary Sommer, Dorothy McFarland, Bruce Wharram, and Doug Hayman.Kevin Eff spoke, saying he was not in favor nor opposed, but questioned the Trustees interpretation of R.C. 705.45(A).Those speaking in opposition of the merger commission/merger issue were: John Jagielski, Robb Brown, Amy Richcreek, Deanne Douglas, Dennis Krohn, Doug Beat, John DeMarco, Merle Boyd, Judy Battles, and John Kennedy. At 8:25 pm Ms. Hanley closed the public comment session.Trustee Contrada thanked all for coming. In her opinion the Board does not have sufficient facts and therefore believes there needs to be a fair and equitable merger commission to gather facts. However, the commission, with a recent annexation is 6 to 4 in favor of the City of Sylvania. While she believes the merger commission issue should go to the public, she cannot support the commission as constituted.Trustee Liedel is also concerned about the composition of the commission (6 to 4). She could see business leaving the Township if merger happens. She is also concerned with the cost of the merger commission – which the Township will be partially responsible for paying.Trustee Hanley stated she lacks trust in the commission due to its composition. She feels the merger will result in an income tax for the Township. She feels the petitions by One Sylvania were circulated with some deception and stated that merger is nothing short of annexation of the Township by the City. She also was very concerned about the effect of a merger on business. Motion # 08-274Ms. Hanley made a motion to adjourn the Special Meeting at 9:06 PM with the statement that the adoption of all resolutions or motions were made in an open meeting of this Board and action by this Board or by any of its committees that resulted in such formal actions were in meetings open to the public in compliance with all legal requirements including Section 121.22 of the Ohio Revised Code.Ms. Liedel seconded.
