Safety Township is a weeklong safety program for pre- kindergarten age children residing within the Sylvania School District. This program is offered once a year, typically in late June. Registration for Safety Township begins in the February preceding the event. During the five days they spend at Safety Township, the children learn about numerous safety-related topics, while being taught in a classroom setting by licensed teachers. The children also receive a safety presentation from a different guest speaker each day. Guest speakers include members of the following organizations: Sylvania Township Police Department, Sylvania Township Fire Department, Sylvania Township Road Department, Sylvania Schools Transportation Department, Lucas County Dog Warden, Lucas County EMS, Operation Lifesaver, Flower Hospital Emergency Room, and Toledo Edison.
The children also spend part of each day on the miniature town learning pedestrian, bicycle and motor safety. The children apply their classroom instruction to practical “real world” situations, and develop the skills they will need to stay safe as they enter kindergarten in the fall.
