PLANNING AND ZONING DEPARTMENT
2011 GOALS & OBJECTIVES
MISSION: To coordinate land use planning and zoning administration efforts in Sylvania Township for the purpose of maintaining the high quality of life currently enjoyed by its residents, promoting a diverse housing stock, preserving existing unique environmental resources and promoting the future social, economic, and environmental sustainability of the greater Sylvania community.
GOALS:
1.) Initiate planning for the 5 year update of the Land Use Plan.
2.) Promote environmentally sustainable development practices and procedures.
3.) Insure Zoning Enforcement is fair and uniformly applied.
4.) Continue to work towards completion of the Document Scanning Project.
5.) Continue to improve Planning and Zoning Department technical reporting capabilities utilizing
GIS / Digital technology.
6.) Purchase and implement upgrades for Zone Pro (SQL) software.
OBJECTIVES:
1.) Develop an RFQ for the 2012 Land Use Plan Update.
2.) Continue to amend the Zoning Resolution to address existing deficiencies in landscaping/
screening provisions, site design, signage and parking standards and create a natural
resource overlay in the upcoming year.
3.) Explore the creation of collaborative planning programs with adjacent governments
where mutual planning opportunities may exist.
4.) Improve the technical reporting and monitoring capabilities of the Planning and Zoning
Department where practical and cost effective.
5.) Maintain planning and zoning training opportunities for the upcoming year.
6.) Implement new computer system to enhance service capabilities and efficiencies of the
department.
ACTION PLAN:
1.) Once the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) is finalized, initiate the consultant selection
process for the Land Use Plan Update.
2.) Seek training opportunities for staff regarding GIS computer mapping and Zone-Pro software
to improve technical capabilities of the department.
3.) Utilize primary and secondary educational resources when practical, in achieving departmental
training objectives.
4.) Continue to initiate Zoning Resolution Text Amendments where required.
5.) Establish a working group, made up of local government representatives, to pursue possible
joint applications for planning grants.
6.) Develop educational training programs for members of the Zoning Commission, Board of
Zoning Appeals, Board of Trustees as well as Planning/Zoning Department staff.
