Buckeye Cable began installing the infrastructure for its cable service in 1965. At that, Ohio law authorized local governments, including Sylvania Townships, to grant franchises to cable operators. The primary purpose of franchise laws was to regulate the number of cable companies installing wiring in each local community.
Ohio law has been changed and the authority of local governments to grant cable franchises was abolished, although the franchise fee must still be paid by the cable company. Sylvania Township has no authority to limit the number of companies providing cable or internet service in the Township or to regulate the operation, service or fees of those companies.
