Sylvania FIRE-EMS Department is proud to announce our new Fire Department ISO (Insurance Services Organization) rating for the Sylvania Community (City & Township). After a thorough review from ISO, they have assigned the Sylvania FIRE-EMS Department as a Class 2 Fire Department. Our last rating was a Class 4, evaluated about 7 years ago. According to the ISO Mitigation web page, there are only 68 fire departments in the State of Ohio with a Class 2 rating, and only 3 rated as a Class 1 department.
What does this mean for the community? If your insurance company uses the ratings from ISO, you may see a reduction in your property insurance costs (if the property is within 1000 feet of a fire hydrant*).
ISO is an independent company that serves insurance companies and others by providing information about risk. The ISO expert staff collects information about municipal fire suppression efforts in communities throughout the United States. In each of these communities, ISO analyzes the relevant data and assigns a PPC (Public Protection Classification) grade, a number from 1 to 10. A Class 1 represents an exemplary fire suppression program; a class 10 indicates the area’s fire suppression program does not meet the ISO minimum criteria.
To determine a rating for each community fire department, the ISO examines the fire department for department operations, staffing, training, equipment and maintenance, fire apparatus and maintenance, community risk reduction, fire code enforcement, fire safety education and fire investigation. ISO evaluates the community water supply, fire hydrants and maintenance of the water system. They also look at the local communication system for emergency reporting, the number of dispatchers, dispatcher training and CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) facilities and how fire fighters are notified of emergencies.
While our rating has greatly improved, there are still areas where improvement is needed. Fire Chief Jeff Kowalski would like to express his thanks to the community for their support of the fire department and to the fire fighters on the line for the work they do every day in service to the community of Sylvania.
*As part of the rating system, Sylvania is a class 2/2X. The 2X is the rating for property located 1000 or more feet from a fire hydrant. This rating signifies that enhanced fire protection capabilities are in place but there is not a creditable water supply available for firefighting in these areas.
