Firefighters/Paramedics
Four Sylvania Township Firefighters/ Paramedics were sworn in by Sylvania Township Fire Chief Chris Nye and Assistant Chief Jeff Bennett at the Sept. 16 meeting of the Board of Sylvania Township Trustees. Chief Nye introduced Nicholas Scott, who transferred from the St. Mary, Ohio, Fire Department, where he had served since 2006; Joseph Walker, a 12-year veteran of the Defiance fire service; Jared McCann, who had been with the Bryan and then the Wauseon fire departments since 2012; and Myles Rodriguez, a Northview graduate and a new hire. All four Firefighters/Paramedics have completed a one-year probationary period.

New hire
Fire Chief Nye was also given approval to hire recruit Cole Hogan in keeping with the department’s commitment to have a minimum of 72 full-time staff in 2025.

Nuisance abated
The trustees authorized Zoning Manager Daryl Graus to abate the high grass identified as a nuisance at 5944 Greenacre Rd. A neighbor spoke about the specific problem during the public hearing regarding the agenda item and was assured by the trustees that the issue would be resolved. The homeowner will be notified that the grass must be cut in seven days, or U.S. Lawns will be authorized to cut at the homeowner’s expense.

Easements
The Township Trustees approved Taylor Automotive Group’s request, introduced by Road Supervisor Rob Nash, to vacate one and accept another easement on Knoll Road, enabling the dealership to build a turnaround, at their cost, per Sylvania Township and Lucas County Engineer design approval.

Trick or treat
At Township Administrator Oliver Turner’s recommendation, trustees voted to keep trick-or-treat on Oct. 31 from 6 to 7:30 pm.

Pacesetter siren
Fiscal Officer David Simko’s request for $750 to repair the Pacesetter Park siren at Pacesetter was also approved. The next Board of Sylvania Township Trustees meeting is Oct. 7 at 5 pm
