Scheduled Pickups

Brush Pickup -
Spring brush & leaf pickup begins April 15, 2024.
Fall brush pickup begins September 16, 2024.

Each pickup is a “one (1) time only” pickup. This service consists of removing piles of storm-damaged brush and leaves, such as branches and tree limbs, this service does not include tree removal. Therefore, we request all residents to place their storm-damaged brush and leaves along the edge of the roadway in separate piles before the scheduled pickup. Do not place piles in the roadway or gutter area. We service over 174 miles of roadway which requires several days to complete the pickup.

Household Pickup -
Scheduled to start Monday, September 9, 2024. Crews will provide one (1) pass through the community. To avoid being missed, all items should be placed at the curb or edge of the road by SUNDAY, September 8.

The Household Pickup service is limited to the following items:
- Bikes
- Toys
- Books / Paper – must be bundled
- Carpeting, cut and rolled no longer than 5 feet
- Containers / Drums – empty
- Appliances, without refrigerants
- Furniture, mattress & box springs (legs over 12” separated)
- Miscellaneous (non-hazardous) loose material in a disposable container and/or bag.
- Removal of all other items is NOT provided with this service.

Fall Leaf Pickup
The Fall Season Leaf Pickup starts Monday, October 21, and is performed on a patrol basis. During peak times one cycle through the Township requires 17(+/-) days. Depending on weather conditions, our goal is to perform at least three (3) pickup cycles.  Leaves should be placed at the curbside or along the edge of the street, free of brush and garden waste allowing our crews to work efficiently.  Crews are unable to pick up leaves mixed with brush and other items. Place your leaves away from obstacles such as mailboxes, fire hydrants, landscaping timbers, and landscaping rocks. These obstacles can cause injury to our employees, and equipment, and reduce efficiency.

PLEASE DO NOT PLACE LEAVES IN THE STREET OR IN PLASTIC BAGS.

Monthly Reports

Potholes:

Potholes are created when moisture seeps into the pavement, freezes, expands, and then thaws. This weakens the pavement. Traffic loosens the pavement even more, and it eventually crumbles and pops out.

Spring temperatures warm the cold pavement, melting and evaporating any frozen water. This creates air pockets that can eventually cause the pavement to break up. A winter of heavy snow or rain and severe freeze/thaw cycles can mean a big pothole season ahead.

The Sylvania Township Road Department will fix potholes on any Township road, please call 419-882-0031, ext.1503.

Storm Sewers:

Sylvania Township Road Department is responsible for storm sewers (open ditches, culverts, catch basins, pipes, and curb inlets) located within the public right-of-way. Township personnel inspect, clean, repair, or replace these components as necessary to keep the steady flow of stormwater. The property owner is responsible for storm sewer pipes, catch basins, and ditches located on private property outside the public right-of-way. Right-of-way is normally 25 feet from the center of a roadway.

Preventive maintenance is the best maintenance for storm sewers and ditches. This can only be achieved with the help of Township residents. Only stormwater (which is the precipitation from rain or melting of snow and ice) should go into the storm sewers and ditches. Leaves, sticks, or other yard waste should not be allowed to collect in ditches or in any area that would allow these items to be washed into the storm sewers and catch basins, as they are likely to seriously reduce water flow through the system. Once a storm system is clogged, the resulting backup of water can create hazards for motorists and damage to homes.

If you would like to request an inspection for a possible blocked or clogged storm sewer, please contact the STRD at 419-882-0031, ext. 1503.

What is the public right-of-way?

The public right-of-way is the land reserved for a street, alley, and walkway or for other public purposes. Several items may occupy space within the public right-of-way, such as sidewalks, street lights, traffic signals, fire hydrants and storm sewers. Public utilities such as gas and electric lines, telephone and cable TV lines may also be within the right-of-way.

The Sylvania Township Road Department maintains the Township right-of-way for road mowing and tree trimming, dead animal removal, storm sewers, and street signs.

Sylvania Township requires a permit be obtained from the Lucas County Engineer’s Office 419-213-2860 prior to the start of any excavation within the Township’s right-of-way area.

The only exception would be in the case of an emergency requiring immediate action to protect the public health, safety and welfare, in which case a permit must be obtained at the earliest possible opportunity. This includes driveway aprons, curb, gutter, storm drainage, sewer tie-ins, water main tie-ins, street construction and/or repairs, and road cuts.
